A centre of excellence for scientific research in polar environments
The French National Committee for Arctic and Antarctic Research (CNFRAA) is a learned society under the authority of the Academy of Sciences since 1957, with the status of an association under the 1901 law (declaration of 29 June 1995, published in the Official Journal of 19 July 1995).
At the national french level, the CNFRAA’s missions aim to promote and enhance all disciplines and scientific research carried out in the Arctic, Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions. It organises annual Scientific Days on Polar Research with the following objectives:
- to encourage meetings between young researchers and experienced researchers;
- enable young researchers to present the innovative aspects of their work;
- encourage interdisciplinary synergies;
- take stock of current issues.
In addition, the CNFRAA maintains regular relations with the IPEV, the national agency for the support of scientific research in the polar regions.
National correspondent for the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research
At the international level, the CNFRAA is the national correspondent for the SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) and its mission is to:
- promote French scientific studies and research in the Arctic, sub-Arctic, Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions;
- represent France at SCAR and its working groups;
- to foster international cooperation and support the interaction of French research in international programmes;
- to provide a forum for the development of scientific programmes;
- to contribute to communication and information on scientific research undertaken in polar and subpolar regions.
