education and formation

As former director of the French Polar Institute Paul-Émile Victor, which operates a polar research station in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard with the German Alfred-Wegener Institute (AWI) Jérôme Chappellaz has seen first-hand the impact of global warming.

He now joins the prestigious Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne to head the Ferring Pharmaceuticals Margaretha Kamprad Chair in Environmental Sciences. He brings many years of experience in studying the evolution of the Earth’s climate and in sharing his findings with the public, and looks back on more than three decades of research devoted to the polar regions.

An inspiring portrait beautifully painted by EPFL Lausanne.
