Job description

One/two post-doctoral researcher positions are available at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering, in the Thermofluids research group. Each appointment has a duration of 4 years and its supported by the Department.

The purpose of the project is to attain unprecedented accuracy and efficiency in modelling heat and mass transfer in fluid flows, including interactions with solid walls and porous matrices. These objectives will be pursued by devising algorithms to simulate contact line motion, wetting and phase change within one or more of the different interface tracking methods already available within the group. The objective is also to be able to efficiently run the codes on modern supercomputers, exploiting thousands of cores and using modern accelerated architectures, such as GPUs. The aim is to extend existing tools for multiscale numerical simulations of heat and mass flux in laminar and turbulent flows.

Profile and skills

  • A PhD in engineering, applied mathematics, physics or equivalent.
  • Strong background in fundamental or applied fluid mechanics

Professional skills

  • Programming skills in Fortran, C, Python, or similar packages
  • Experience with state-of-the-art large-scale parallel fluid mechanics simulations
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills
  • Experience with visualisation tools (e.g. Paraview, Visit)
  • Experience conducting simulations of multiphase flows (e.g., direct numerical simulations of turbulent emulsions, bubbles/droplets in turbulence, wetting on complex walls)
  • Experience with implementation on GPUs machines, e.g., CUDA fortran
  • Experience mentoring other PhD or Masters students
