The Water Institute is seeking a Coastal Carbon Scientist to model work in coastal and deltaic environments with a focus of assessing carbon fluxes in coastal habitats of wetlands, estuaries, and coastal ocean.

Position description

Candidates selected will help conduct field work, prepare samples for analysis, and analyse data to help improve the fluxes of a carbon budget for coastal Louisiana while working closely with partners from academia, industry, and local, state, and regional governments as necessary to generate exemplary, world-class applied research. Responsibilities will reflect career stage and previous experience.

Profil and skills

  • PhD with one post doc or 2+ years of work experience in oceanography, coastal or aquatic ecology, limnology, environmental science, wetland ecology or other ecology-related field;
  • Expertise in the coastal carbon cycling, including assessing carbon fluxes and stocks coastal habitats;
  • Experience working with analytical frameworks (e.g., box model);
  • Strong quantitative skills and experience with numerical models and scientific programming is advantageous, particularly with Fortran and analysis tools such as Matlab, Python, or Julia;
  • Experience with modelling of coastal hydrology, wetland, and/or coastal estuaries (such as Delft 3D, FVCOM and SCHISM) is preferred;
  • Fluency in English (reading, speaking and writing).
